Welcome to Inside the Partnership (EMC/MSFT) Episode #22, your link to all of the latest news, notes and happenings in the EMC Microsoft relationship.
As highlighted in Episode #21, Microsoft SQL Server 2012 is here!! EMC was a Diamond Launch Sponsor and heavily involved in all of the launch activities and global symposiums. Check out the SQL 2012 landing page now on the Everything Microsoft at EMC Community Site.
With the SQL Launch behind us, our attention turns to the Microsoft Management Summit 2012. Once again, EMC is a gold sponsor of MMS and our engineers are hard at work preparing for Systems Center 2012.
While I was in Redmond for the SQL Launch, I was able to "sneak" into the Redmond Development Center. While I was there, I was able to capture a quick demo of Systems Center Operations Manager 2012 (SCOM 2012). This episode includes a demo of SCOM 2012 RC, along with finding and installing the EMC Management Packs and monitoring an EMC array. The Management Packs are just the beginning of the EMC engineering efforts taking place for MMS. Stay tuned to Inside the Partnership for more.
Did I mention, the SCOM Management Packs are FREE!!!! As an EMC customer, all you need to do is visit the Everything Microsoft at EMC Community Site as demonstrated in this episode.

Inside the Partnership: Episode 09: "Big Data Isilon (& New VPLEX Whitepaper)" (Jul 25 2011)
As follow-up to Episode #8 (VPLEX and Hyper-V) http://tiny.cc/f4m29 we take a look at a new reference architecture from EMC Global Solutions. This architecture "Long-Distance Application Mobility Enabled by EMC VPLEX GEO" highlights a typical customer with Windows Server Hyper-V, Sharepoint and SAP You can find the whitepaper here http://tiny.cc/8ng85
Once again, this edition of Inside the Partnership we go back to Microsoft Teched 2011. While at Teched, I spend some time with Ian Breitner. Ian is a Senior Technical Alliance Manager for EMC Isilon. We spend some time talking about BIG DATA and managing Big Data with Isilon.
Inside the Partnership: The Video Series: Episode 08: "Hyper-V and VPLEX" (Jul 3 2011)
In this edition of Inside the Partnership we go back to Microsoft Teched 2011. While at Teched, I spend some time with James Baldwin. In fact, so much time that I had to cut our topics into two video segments. This episode covers EMC VPLEX & Microsoft Hyper-V. The foundation for extending Microsoft Hyper-V clusters outside of datacenter walls.
Take a traditional microsoft cluster, and extend the single CSV (Cluster Shared Volume) across datacenters. Allowing clusters to extend beyond traditional limitations. The cluster nodes have no idea they are physically seperated, they act and provide availability as if they where in the same server rack.
I started the Inside the Partnership (EMC/MSFT) Video series just about a year ago. It was, and is, my attempt to get the word out. Technology at both EMC and Microsoft continues to evolve. The goal of the video series is to capture all of the latest integration between EMCs vast portfolio of hardware and software and the Microsoft Enterprise Application stack.
With 23 videos in the series, and many more to come, I found it more and more difficult to capture all of the information in a 7-10 minute video. For example, the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Launch Special Edition is 24 minutes, maybe a little too long for a video series.
I can’t leave the footage on the cutting room floor, so in order to capture a little more detail, here is the first edition of the Inside the Partnership (EMC/MSFT): The Podcast.
Who better to chat with in the first edition of the podcast than Brian Martin? Brian is the Senior Director of the EMC Microsoft Technical Alliance, and is very involved in just about every phase of the EMC/Microsoft alliance. This episode was recorded March 7th, the official launch date of Microsoft SQL Server 2012.
The first podcast is below. I’m currently working on the official RSS feeds for both the Podcast and the Video Series. Stay tuned for more information, and as always follow me on Twitter @EMCMSFT. Drop me an e-mail Sam.Marraccini@EMC.com and subscribe to this blog here at EMCMSFT.Typepad.com
This Blog title comes directly from today’s press release, even better is the sub title "EMC Portfolio Enables 80% Faster Provisioning, 4X Better Performance and Up To 30X Less Backup Storage for SQL Server Applications."
EMCs commitment, across divisions and products, is by far the largest partnering effort I have experienced in my 13 years at EMC. This sponsorship is being covered across the globe and covers just about every technology here at EMC. I spend some time in Redmond, Washington tracking down EMC engineers to find out exactly what they have been doing to prepare for the Microsoft SQL 2012 launch event.
I did my best to capture as much as possible in the latest edition of “Inside the Partnership (EMC/MSFT) – SQL Server Special Edition” (Episode #21)
The video is a little longer than normal, ok a lot longer, but it does capture a significant amount of work being done, and yet I didn't get to cover everything. So stay tuned to this blog for more episodes, and maybe a podcast? . The video could have been 6 or 7 separate episodes of Inside the Partnership but I wanted to look more holistically at SQL 2012 and EMC integration across divisions.
I started with Brian Martin (Sr. Director Microsoft Technical Alliance) then spent a little time on the EMC Storage Portfolio in general before visiting: Colin Bailey (Sr. Director Symmetrix Product Marketing), and Jon Siegal, (Sr. Director Product Marketing EMC Unified Division).
I spent some time with Eyal Sharon and Haiyan Hyang in the solutions lab. Eyal spent some time in the video demonstrating the advanced performance we are seeing with EMC Fast Cache and Microsoft SQL Server 2012. Eyan and Haiyan are leading the team of engineers working on the two Proven Solutions highlighted in today’s press release.
EMC SQL Server 2012 Readiness – Performance with VMAXe FAST VP and SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn Local Availability Groups – This solution documents technology considerations for utilizing the new SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Groups with EMC FAST VP and EMC VMAXe. The focus of this solution is to create availability groups on a FAST VP enabled VMAXe to support business requirements for read-only secondary database replicas. This approach allows for the dedication of the primary replica for mission critical online transaction processing (OLTP) workloads while isolating OLAP/BI demands.
EMC SQL Server 2012 Multi-Site Disaster Recovery – Enabled by SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Groups, EMC VNX and FAST Suite – This solution documents technology considerations for utilizing the new SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Groups, with EMC FAST Suite and EMC VNX unified storage. The focus of this solution is to utilize the new SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn transaction-level replication technology to maximize the availability of a set of user databases between two distant sites while enabling the database storage efficiency and performance to be optimized by using EMC FAST Suite on VNX 5700.
In addition to the solutions work Txomion Barturen (Sr Manager, Partner Engineering) spent some time reviewing remote clustering and specifically the work EMC is doing in the SQLCAT labs. Get the Whitepaper here SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn: Multisite Failover Cluster.
And in case you missed the Why EMC for Microsoft SQL Server 2012 introduction here it is:
As mentioned previously EMC is a Diamond Sponsor of the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 launch, that sponsorship included a virtual presence in the exhibit hall, not to mention speaking sessions in the global symposiums. Here is what the EMC booth looked like at the Virtual Launch Event:
